Pair of 18th C Dutch Delft Garniture lidded vases. Missing finials
Delft garniture sets consist of three, five, or seven matching vases, were a popular decorative element in the 17th and 18th centuries, particularly in the Netherlands. These sets, often made of tin-glazed earthenware known as Delftware, were inspired by Chinese porcelain and were designed to be displayed on mantels or cabinets.
Many of the lidded vases were adorned with finials, but with age, the finials are missing on many of the vases today, as is the case with this pair. If you find a full set, with finials, the price reflects that rarity. The vases are stunning with or without the finials, or even the lids for that matter.
Characteristics:
Tin Glaze:
Delftware is characterized by its tin glaze, which gives it a white background for painted decorations
Blue and White:
While Delftware can be found in various colors, blue and white became the most iconic and widely produced color scheme, inspired by Chinese porcelain.
Decoration:
Early Delftware often featured Chinese-inspired motifs, but over time, European and Dutch designs, including floral patterns, landscapes, and figures, became more prevalent.
